When creating this model, students should allow for a side view of their room by removing some of the walls. In order to assist in designing an accurate model of their current bedroom, students will record their measurements in feet and inches, and draw a blueprint of their bedroom as a guide for creating their SketchUp model.
Along with the dimensions, students will include the measurements and locations of their bed, at least one large piece of furniture, window(s), and door(s). To complete the model of the student’s current bedroom, students will first use their knowledge in regards to measurement in their mathematics unit to measure the dimensions of their current bedroom in feet and inches. For this eighth grade lesson using the Google application SketchUp, students will use their prior knowledge about both the SketchUp application and measurement concepts in mathematics to replicate the exact size and shape of their current bedroom and to create their “dream bedroom model” in this application.
